Away Everywhere Bag Review: Worth the Hype?

Most tote bags collapse when you set them down, and a laptop slides to the bottom. The Everywhere Bag holds a boxy shape because of a stiff internal frame, so it stands upright on a cafe table or under an airplane seat even when it’s half empty.

The padded laptop sleeve fits up to a 15-inch laptop and sits against the back panel. It is an open-top sleeve inside the main compartment, not a zippered laptop pocket like a backpack. The sleeve pads against bumps. It will not save a laptop from a spill in the same compartment, so keep liquids in a separate pocket.

The removable shoulder strap is the travel feature. Carry the bag by its handles at the office, then clip on the crossbody strap at the airport so both hands are free for a rolling suitcase. The strap is padded and adjustable.

You get a main compartment with the laptop sleeve, an exterior back slip pocket for boarding passes, and a few interior pockets for a phone and cards. There is no shoe compartment, water bottle pocket, or key clip. Away kept the pocket count low for a cleaner look.

The nylon exterior is water-resistant and wipes clean easily. It’s durable enough for daily use, though it shows scuffs more visibly in lighter colors. The hardware (zippers, clips, buckles) is solid. The bag weighs about 2.2 pounds empty, which is reasonable for a structured tote but heavier than an unstructured canvas tote.

The Flex is the standard Away Carry-On with an expansion system: a nylon panel hidden behind the polycarbonate shell that unzips to add about 2 inches of depth and roughly 8 liters of space. Collapsed, it looks and behaves like any hardside carry-on. Expanded, the nylon section shows between the two shell halves. The shell is the same scratch-resistant polycarbonate Away uses across the line, with 360 degree spinner wheels, a built-in TSA combination lock, and a slot for the ejectable battery that pops out in about five seconds when a bag gets gate-checked. Unexpanded, the bag meets the 22 by 14 by 9 inch carry-on limit. Expanded, it measures roughly 22 by 14 by 11, which is over the line at most airlines. Use the expansion on checked trips and on the flight home with souvenirs, not to pack more into the overhead bin. If you always carry on, you pay for capacity you cannot use, and you haul 8.1 pounds empty against the standard Carry-On’s 7.7. Inside, a compression panel with straps, a mesh divider and a laundry bag do the organizing, and the expanded section adds space under the compression panel that suits shoes or worn clothes you want kept away from clean ones. The nylon expansion panel is the one part of the bag less durable than the shell around it.

The Flex is not sold through Away’s Amazon storefront. The standard Carry-On is, and it is the same shell and interior without the expansion zip. The Dagne Dover Dakota Neoprene Tote is the closest competitor, and it usually costs a little less. It’s softer (neoprene vs. Away’s rigid nylon), weighs less, and has a dedicated laptop compartment with its own zipper. The Dagne Dover is better for gym-to-office transitions. The Away is better for office-to-airport.

The Lo & Sons O.G. 2 adds a separate shoe/dirty clothes compartment at the bottom and more organizational pockets. It costs $50 more but solves the overnight trip problem better than the Everywhere Bag. If you regularly pack a change of clothes in your work bag, the O.G. 2 is worth the premium.

At the budget end, the Amazon Basics Laptop Tote Bag does the basics: padded laptop sleeve, shoulder strap, enough pockets. It won’t hold its shape, and the materials look cheaper in an office.
