The Away Carry-On Flex is Away’s answer to the “I need more space” problem. It starts as a standard 39.5-liter carry-on and expands to 47.5 liters with a zipper: an extra 8 liters that turns a 3-day bag into a 5-day bag. The expansion concept isn’t new (Travelpro and Samsonite have done it for years), but Away’s version adds their signature hardside polycarbonate shell and interior organization to the formula.
The Flex costs noticeably more than Away’s standard Carry-On. Here’s whether that expansion feature is worth the premium.

The expansion system uses a nylon panel hidden behind the polycarbonate shell. Unzip it and the bag gains about 2 inches of depth. When collapsed, the bag looks and functions like a standard hardside carry-on. When expanded, the nylon section is visible between the two shell halves, giving the bag a soft-hard hybrid appearance.
The polycarbonate shell is the same material Away uses on their standard Carry-On: durable, scratch-resistant (the matte finish hides scuffs well), and lightweight for its size. The 360-degree spinner wheels are smooth on hard floors and reasonably quiet. The built-in TSA-approved combination lock eliminates the need for a separate lock.
Away’s signature ejectable battery (sold separately on newer models) lets you charge your phone from the suitcase. The battery pops out for compliance with airline regulations that prohibit lithium batteries in checked bags. If you gate-check the suitcase, you pull the battery out and put it in your pocket; it takes 5 seconds.
Interior organization includes a compression panel with straps, a mesh divider, and a laundry bag. The expanded section adds packing space below the compression panel, which works well for shoes or dirty clothes you want to keep separate from clean items.
The Expansion Tradeoff
When expanded, the Carry-On Flex exceeds standard carry-on dimensions on most airlines. The unexpanded bag meets the 22 x 14 x 9 inch limit. Expanded, it pushes to about 22 x 14 x 11. That means the expansion is really for checked bag situations or for lenient airlines that don’t measure strictly.
This limits the expansion’s utility. You can’t pack the bag expanded and then try to carry it on; it won’t fit in the sizer box. The expansion is for return trips when you’ve bought souvenirs, or for flights where you plan to check the bag. If you always carry on, the expansion goes unused.
At 8.1 pounds empty, the Flex is also heavier than Away’s standard Carry-On (7.7 lbs) because of the expansion hardware. The weight difference is small but noticeable on airlines with carry-on weight limits.

The Carry-On Flex makes the most sense for travelers who sometimes carry on and sometimes check, depending on the trip. The expansion adds genuine flexibility for checked-bag trips and return flights padded with souvenirs. If you exclusively carry on, the standard Away Carry-On is the better buy; an expansion you can’t use on a plane isn’t worth extra money and added weight.
How It Compares
The standard Away Carry-On weighs 0.4 lbs less, costs less, and has the same construction minus the expansion. For carry-on-only travelers, the standard version is the smarter buy.

To be clear: the Carry-On Flex itself isn’t sold on Amazon. Away’s official storefront carries the standard Carry-On, which shares the shell, wheels, and interior compression system but skips the expansion zip. If you’ve read this far and decided the expansion isn’t worth the extra weight, the standard version is the one we’d order. If you want the Flex specifically, it’s only available through Away directly.
The Travelpro Maxlite 5 Expandable is a softside expandable carry-on at less than half the price. The expansion on the Maxlite works within carry-on limits (the unexpanded bag is smaller, so the expanded version still fits). The tradeoff is softside construction versus Away’s polycarbonate shell.
The Away Everywhere Bag is a different category entirely (tote vs. roller) but serves the same “I need more space” impulse. If you’re looking for overflow capacity, the Everywhere Bag as a personal item alongside any carry-on gives you more total space than expanding the Flex.
