Away Luggage Dupes: 6 Lookalike Carry-Ons Compared on Specs

We may earn a commission if you buy through links on this page. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The closest Away luggage dupe on Amazon is the LEVEL8 Hard Shell 20-inch carry-on. It's pure polycarbonate like the Away Carry-On, holds 40 liters against Away's 41, and has a built-in TSA lock. You lose Away's compression pad and its five years of free repairs.

We built this list from published specs, not from a packing trip. Every bag below is sold on Amazon under its own brand name, and each one gets measured against the numbers Away prints on its own product page: shell, size, weight, lock, interior and warranty. Where a listing doesn't state something, we say so instead of guessing.

What the Away Carry-On Does Well

The Away Carry-On earned its following with a short list of things done properly. Away lists a 100% polycarbonate shell, 360-degree spinner wheels, a TSA-approved combination lock, reverse coil zippers and a double-buckle compression pad on one side of the clamshell. The other side gets three mesh pockets and a hanging pocket, and a drawstring laundry bag ships inside.

Interior20.1 x 13.9 x 7.5 in
Weight and capacity7.5 lbs, 41 L
Handle2 height settings
CoverageLifetimeCare: free repairs for 5 years, up to one replacement in that period, repair support after

Two details matter for anyone shopping for a lookalike. First, Away's page gives two exterior figures for the same bag, and both list a 14.4-inch width, so the Away itself runs over a strict 22 x 14 x 9 inch sizer. Second, the coverage is the part a cheaper bag can't copy. Away's LifetimeCare, which applies to bags bought on or after April 14, 2026, covers functional damage from defects or rough handling, with complimentary repairs for the first five years and round-trip shipping on Away after that.

How We Matched the Picks

A dupe has to look the part and do the job. We started with the bags the ranking roundups name most often (Matador Network, Valerie & Valise and Hip2Save), kept the ones in stock on Amazon at the time of writing, and scored each on five specs:

  • Shell material. Away uses pure polycarbonate. Polycarbonate flexes on impact and springs back, while ABS costs less and is more prone to cracking. Our ABS vs. polycarbonate luggage guide covers how those shells differ.
  • Size. Exterior with wheels, against both Away's figures and the 22 x 14 x 9 inch box most US carriers publish.
  • Weight. Away lists 7.5 lbs. Every extra pound matters on airlines that cap cabin bags by weight.
  • Lock, wheels and handle. A built-in TSA lock and four or more spinner wheels are table stakes at Away's level.
  • Warranty. The spec where every pick falls furthest behind, so we state each one's terms, or say the listing has none.

Bags that copy a logo, or listings that call themselves replicas, didn't make the list. Every pick below carries its maker's own name.

The Away Luggage Dupes Worth Buying

1. LEVEL8 Hard Shell 20-Inch: The Closest Spec Match

Editor's Pick · Closest to Away

LEVEL8 Hard Shell 20-Inch

Pure polycarbonate, 40 liters and a built-in TSA lock: the nearest thing on Amazon to the Away Carry-On's spec sheet.

ShellPolycarbonate
Exterior21.5 x 14.5 x 9.2 in

Line the LEVEL8 up against Away's page and most rows match. LEVEL8 lists a 3-layer polycarbonate shell, an exterior of 21.5 x 14.5 x 9.2 inches with wheels and handles, 40 liters of packing space and a weight of 7.7 lbs. Away lists 41 liters and 7.5 lbs, so you're within a liter and a quarter pound on the two numbers people feel most.

The LEVEL8 rolls on eight spinner wheels and has a four-level aluminum handle, two more height stops than Away's trolley. Inside, it's a split case with two fully lined compartments and zippered mesh pockets. There's no compression pad in the listing, and that's the real gap: Away's double-buckle pad presses one side flat, while the LEVEL8 relies on its divider. Its width of 14.5 inches is a tenth over Away's, so neither bag clears a strict 14-inch sizer.

What you give up: the compression pad, and any stated warranty. The Amazon listing doesn't name one, so check with LEVEL8 before you count on repair coverage.

2. Traveler's Choice Pagosa 22-Inch: The Dupe the Roundups Name

Matador picked a Traveler's Choice hardshell as its Away dupe, and Yahoo's lookalike roundup put the Pagosa at the top of its list. The current 22-inch Pagosa listing on Amazon describes a polypropylene shell, a 2-inch expansion gusset, a Travel Sentry TSA combination lock and 360-degree spinner wheels. Amazon's listing data gives 22.5 x 14.5 x 9.25 inches and 7.26 lbs.

The Pagosa does two things the Away doesn't. It expands, which Away's standard Carry-On doesn't, and it has top, side and bottom carry handles plus self-mending #10 zippers. The interior is a main compartment with a zippered middle divider and several zippered pockets.

What you give up: polypropylene isn't polycarbonate, so the shell feel and flex differ from the Away. At 22.5 inches tall it's also the longest bag here, half an inch past the 22-inch line before you expand it. The listing states no warranty.

3. Samsonite Freeform Carry-On: Best Warranty for the Money

If the thing you'd miss most about Away is somebody to call when a wheel breaks, this is the dupe to buy. Samsonite's product page lists a limited 10-year global warranty, a 6.5 lb weight, a built-in TSA lock and an expandable polypropylene shell. That's 1 lb lighter than the Away. The warranty runs 10 years, where Away's complimentary repairs run five.

The Amazon listing gives the exterior as 15 x 10 x 23 inches with wheels and the interior as 20.5 x 14.5 x 10, with elastic straps, a divider and a pouch. It's a bigger bag than the Away on every axis, closer to Away's Bigger Carry-On in footprint. Our Samsonite Freeform review goes deeper on the model.

What you give up: the polycarbonate shell, the compression pad and the fit. At 23 inches tall it's a gate-check risk on airlines that size bags.

4. Coolife 20-Inch Carry-On: The Lightest Pick

Coolife shows up on Valerie & Valise's and Yahoo's Away alternative lists, and this 20-inch model has a brushed, textured hard shell. Coolife lists an ABS and polycarbonate blend, a 22 x 14.7 x 8.6 inch exterior, YKK zippers rated for 3,000 open-and-close cycles, a TSA lock and an adjustable aluminum handle. Amazon's listing data puts it at 6 lbs, the lightest of our six picks and 1.5 lbs under the Away.

It's also the only pick under 9 inches deep, which helps with depth checks at the gate. The 14.7-inch width still runs over a 14-inch sizer.

What you give up: the shell is a blend, not pure polycarbonate, and the listing gives no capacity figure, no compression system and no warranty terms for this carry-on.

5. LEVEL8 Grace 20-Inch Expandable: For a Front Laptop Pocket

Away's standard Carry-On opens only as a clamshell, so your laptop rides inside with your clothes. The Grace adds a front-access compartment that LEVEL8 sizes for laptops up to 15.6 inches, which means you can pull it at security without unzipping the main case.

LEVEL8 lists a PC and ABS shell with a textured finish, eight rubber-covered spinner wheels, an aluminum handle, and an exterior of 21.8 x 14.5 x 9.8 inches with 1.57 inches of expansion. Capacity runs 36 to 42 liters, and LEVEL8 notes the expanded bag may need to be checked. We covered the Grace next to Away's flagship in our Quince vs. Away luggage comparison.

What you give up: weight. At 9 lbs it's 1.5 lbs heavier than the Away, and the front bay adds depth.

6. Amazon Basics 21-Inch Hardside: The Price Floor

WKBW's Away alternative story pointed shoppers at an Amazon Basics hardside, and the current 21-inch version is the cheapest bag here. Amazon lists 14.8 x 10 x 21.7 inches including wheels, an extra-thick scratch-resistant shell, expansion of up to 25%, an interior divider with three zippered pockets and four multi-directional wheels. Amazon's listing data gives 6.8 lbs.

What you give up: the listing doesn't name a shell material or a lock, and at 10 inches deep it's the deepest of the six. Our Amazon Basics luggage review covers the three-year warranty and what it excludes.

When the Away Is Worth Paying For

Frequent flyers get the most from the Away, because they're the ones who break wheels and crack corners. Its LifetimeCare covers repairs free for five years, including damage from rough travel, and keeps repairing after that. Of the six picks, only Samsonite (10 years) and Amazon Basics (three years) state warranty terms; the other four listings name none, so a broken bag there can mean a new bag.

Buy it too if the compression pad is what sold you. None of these six lists one. If you want that system and a different look, our Monos vs. Away comparison covers Monos, the other polycarbonate brand that builds a compression pad into its carry-on.

For everyone else, the LEVEL8 Hard Shell gets you the Away's material, size class and capacity, and the Samsonite Freeform gets you the longer warranty term at 6.5 lbs. If you'd rather see the whole field first, our best carry-on luggage picks rank the bags that sell alongside Away.

FAQ

What is the best Away luggage dupe?

The LEVEL8 Hard Shell 20-inch carry-on is the closest match on specs. It uses a polycarbonate shell like the Away, holds 40 liters against Away's 41, weighs 7.7 lbs against 7.5, and has a built-in TSA lock. It lacks Away's compression pad, and its Amazon listing states no warranty.

Are Away suitcases worth it?

They're worth it for frequent flyers who'll use the coverage. Away's LifetimeCare gives five years of free repairs, including rough-travel damage, and up to one replacement in that window. If you fly a few times a year, a polycarbonate lookalike like the LEVEL8 Hard Shell covers the same trips for much less.

Is there a better suitcase than Away for the money?

On weight and warranty, yes: the Samsonite Freeform carry-on weighs 6.5 lbs, a pound less than the Away, and carries a 10-year limited global warranty from Samsonite. On shell and fit, no. It uses polypropylene instead of polycarbonate and measures 23 inches tall, a bigger bag than the Away.

Is Quince an Away dupe?

Quince is the most talked-about direct-to-consumer alternative, and it uses a polycarbonate shell like Away. It isn't sold on Amazon, and its flagship carry-on measures larger than the Away on every axis. Our Quince vs. Away luggage comparison lays out the sizes side by side.

Do Away luggage dupes fit in the overhead bin?

Most fit US mainline bins, but none of the six picks here measures inside a strict 22 x 14 x 9 inch box once wheels are counted, and neither does the Away. The Coolife comes closest on depth at 8.6 inches. Check your airline's limit before you fly a budget carrier.
