Ryanair Cabin Bag Size: 40 x 30 x 20 cm on Every Fare
Ryanair cabin bag size on every fare is one small bag, 40 x 30 x 20 cm (15.7 x 11.8 x 7.9 in), stored under the seat. The 10 kg overhead bag, 55 x 40 x 20 cm (21.7 x 15.7 x 7.9 in), comes only with Priority & 2 Cabin Bags, bought on its own or inside the Regular, Flexi Plus, and Time Saver fares.
Ryanair finished installing bigger gate sizers at all 235 of its airports on 4 September 2025. The help-center bag policy lists the free bag at 40 x 30 x 20 cm, and we reread it before this guide went live.
If the bag will not drop into the gate sizer, Ryanair refuses it or puts it in the hold for a gate fee of 70 to 75 EUR or GBP.

The two Ryanair cabin sizes
The centimeter figures below are the ones on Ryanair's bag policy help article. Inches are the conversions we store in the airline table.
| Bag | Size (cm) | Size (in) | Where it goes | On which fare |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small personal bag | 40 x 30 x 20 | 15.7 x 11.8 x 7.9 | Under the seat | Every fare |
| 10 kg cabin bag | 55 x 40 x 20 | 21.7 x 15.7 x 7.9 | Overhead locker | Priority & 2 Cabin Bags only |
Ryanair names the free bag as a handbag or laptop bag. A small backpack that actually measures 40 x 30 x 20 cm counts. The liter number on a hangtag doesn't. If any side is over 40, 30, or 20 cm, the sizer is the judge.
Measure the packed bag, including pockets, wheels, and anything that sticks out. Our how to measure luggage notes walk through height, width, and depth the way a gate gauge sees them.
The help-center bag policy doesn't print a kilogram cap on the free 40 x 30 x 20 cm bag. The 10 kg cap is on the Priority overhead bag.
What Priority & 2 Cabin Bags buys
Priority is the only way to take a second cabin bag into the overhead locker. You still bring the small 40 x 30 x 20 cm bag under the seat, plus one 10 kg bag at 55 x 40 x 20 cm in the bin, and you board through the Priority queue.
Regular, Flexi Plus, and Time Saver fares include it. Plus swaps it for a 20 kg check-in bag, and Family Plus for a 10 kg check-in bag per person. On a Basic fare you buy Priority separately, at 12.49 to 36 EUR or GBP per flight at booking on Ryanair's fees table, or you fly with the under-seat bag alone.
The other way to bring 10 kg is the 10 kg Check-in Bag. You keep the small bag with you, and the bigger one goes to the bag-drop desk before security and flies in the hold.
A 55 x 40 x 20 cm trolley is a small European cabin case, 20 cm deep. Many bags sold as "cabin size" are 23 or 25 cm deep and will not go in. For overhead cases that stay inside this box, start with our best carry-on luggage picks and read the overall centimeters, wheels included, before you pack.
What the gate sizer does
Ryanair checks cabin bags in sizers at the boarding gate. The help article on oversized cabin bags is blunt: if your small bag or 10 kg cabin bag does not fit in the baggage sizers, it is refused at the gate, or placed in the hold for a fee at the level in the Regulations. You leave it at the aircraft steps, in the gate trolley, or where the agent points.
Ryanair's table of fees prints that gate charge as 70 to 75 EUR or GBP for a bag over 55 x 40 x 20 cm, and section 3.2 of the terms applies the same band to any carry-on that's too large, plus VAT on domestic flights. A 20 kg Check-in Bag bought online runs 21.49 to 59.99 EUR or GBP per flight on the same table, so a bag you already know is too big costs less booked ahead. The rule itself sits in What happens at the boarding gate if my cabin bags are bigger than my allowance?
Section 3.1 of the baggage regulations in Ryanair's terms and conditions says each passenger may take one small carry-on up to 40 x 30 x 20 cm, and that the small-bag sizers measure 42 x 20 x 30 cm. That extra 2 cm on the long side is the only play the gauge admits. Rotate the bag so 40 cm goes into 42, 30 into 30, and 20 into 20. A handle, bottle pocket, or stuffed front panel that will not go in still fails.
Every airline row in our tables carries the URL its figures came from, and how we measure explains how we take a bag's outside dimensions.
The 2025 sizer change
Ryanair's 4 September 2025 release announced that the bigger sizers were in place at every one of its 235 airports, and that the free bag was now 40 x 30 x 20 cm. Ryanair puts that at 33% bigger than the EU standard free bag of 40 x 30 x 15 cm.
The sizers grew to fit the new box, so an under-seat bag that cleared the old gauge clears the new one.
Ryanair's fare-bundle page still writes the small bag as 40 x 20 x 30 cm. That's the current box with the axes rotated, and the bag-policy article and the sizer in front of you are what count.
Ryanair next to Vueling, easyJet, and Wizz
Centimeters, from each airline's own baggage page, rechecked before this guide went live. The full 68-row carry-on checker stays on the luggage size chart.
| Airline | Free under-seat (cm) | Overhead bag (cm) | Overhead weight | How you get the overhead bag |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ryanair (FR) | 40 x 30 x 20 | 55 x 40 x 20 | 10 kg / 22 lb | Priority & 2 Cabin Bags, also inside Regular, Flexi Plus, and Time Saver fares |
| Vueling (VY) | 40 x 30 x 20 | 55 x 40 x 20 | 10 kg / 22 lb | Fly Grande, Fly Pro, Premium, infants; Fly if you pick it; paid add-on on Fly Light |
| Wizz Air (W6) | 40 x 30 x 20 | 55 x 40 x 23 | 10 kg / 22 lb | WIZZ Priority |
| easyJet (U2) | 45 x 36 x 20 | 56 x 45 x 25 | 15 kg / 33 lb each bag | Paid add-on, unless easyJet Plus or Inclusive Plus |
easyJet's free under-seat bag at 45 x 36 x 20 cm is the generous European personal item, and a bag built to that box will not drop into a Ryanair sizer.
Vueling prints the same 40 x 30 x 20 cm under-seat limit and ties the 55 x 40 x 20 cm overhead bag to the fare. Our Vueling cabin bag size guide has the fare-by-fare split and its 60 to 140 EUR gate bands. Wizz matches the free box and gives the trolley 3 cm more depth (23 cm against Ryanair's 20 cm). A bag that clears Wizz can still fail Ryanair on that last 3 cm.
What still fits in 40 x 30 x 20 cm
Handbags, slim laptop sleeves, and small backpacks that were cut to this box. Soft sides help, because a stuffed front pocket is usually the side that hits the gauge. Hard cases at this size exist, and they have no squeeze left once they are 20 cm deep.
Don't buy on liters. A pack labeled 20 liters can still be 45 cm on the long side, which is an easyJet number. If you want under-seat packs already filtered for this kind of box, use our personal item backpacks list and read the overall centimeters on each card.
Hold bags, if you skip Priority
Plus includes a 20 kg check-in bag and Family Plus a 10 kg bag per person. On every other fare you buy hold bags separately, in 10 kg, 20 kg, or 23 kg. Each passenger can buy up to three 20 kg bags plus one 23 kg bag. Nothing over 81 x 119 x 119 cm goes in the cabin or the hold, and nothing over 32 kg either, mobility equipment excepted.
Passengers on the same booking can share the checked allowance they've paid for when they check in together. An overweight bag pays 13 EUR or GBP per extra kilo. Bags already bought are non-refundable, like every optional service in Ryanair's terms. A passenger without Priority who brings a 10 kg check-in bag to the boarding gate has it refused or put in the hold for 46 to 75 EUR or GBP.
FAQ
What is the free Ryanair cabin bag size?
40 x 30 x 20 cm, under the seat, on every fare. Ryanair's help center names a handbag or laptop bag. A backpack that actually measures those centimeters counts. There is no second free cabin bag.
What size cabin bag does Ryanair Priority allow?
Priority & 2 Cabin Bags adds one 10 kg bag at 55 x 40 x 20 cm in the overhead locker, on top of the small 40 x 30 x 20 cm bag under the seat. It also puts you in the Priority boarding queue.
Does the free Ryanair bag have a weight limit?
The bag-policy article does not print a kilogram cap on the 40 x 30 x 20 cm bag. The 10 kg limit is attached to the Priority overhead bag. If a gate agent weighs the small bag, that is enforcement, not a published number on that page.
What happens if my bag does not fit the Ryanair sizer?
It's refused at the boarding gate, or placed in the hold for 70 to 75 EUR or GBP, the band in Ryanair's terms. You leave it at the steps, in the gate trolley, or where the agent directs. Pay for hold space online if you already know the bag will not go in.
Can I take a backpack as my free Ryanair bag?
Yes, if it is 40 x 30 x 20 cm or smaller when packed. Ryanair's examples are a handbag or laptop bag. A backpack still has to drop into the sizer.
What can an infant bring on Ryanair?
Infants on a lap (8 days to 23 months) get no cabin bag. The adult may bring a baby bag up to 5 kg at 45 x 35 x 20 cm, plus two items of baby equipment, free.
Did the Ryanair cabin bag size change?
Yes. Ryanair finished installing bigger sizers at all 235 airports on 4 September 2025, and the help-center bag policy now lists the free bag at 40 x 30 x 20 cm. A bag that cleared the old gauge still clears the new one.
