How to Weigh Luggage Without a Scale (Plus Empty Bag Weights)

Step on a bathroom scale, note your weight, then step on it again holding the packed bag and subtract. That difference is the suitcase. Do it twice and keep the higher number. Leave a couple of pounds under the airline cap, because the airport scale is the one that charges you.
A dedicated hanging scale is nicer if you fly a lot. You do not need one to stay under 50 lb at home. The empty-bag table below is copied from the brands' own spec sheets. Those are manufacturer numbers, not TBE scale readings. We have not put these bags on a scale of our own.
How to weigh luggage on a bathroom scale
- Put the scale on a hard floor
- Write down your weight once settled
- Hold the bag, step on again
- Subtract, then step off to repeat
- Reweigh; keep higher of close readings
Most bathroom scales will not read a suitcase sitting on them by itself. The platform wants a person-sized load before it wakes up, so an empty 6 lb carry-on often shows 0.00. That is why you hold the bag.
- Put the scale on a hard floor, not a bath mat. Carpet adds bounce and the number jumps.
- Step on barefoot or in the same socks both times. Write down your weight once it settles.
- Pick up the packed bag, hold it against your chest, and step on again. Wait until the digits stop moving.
- Subtract. That is the bag.
- Repeat. If the two bag weights are within a pound, trust the higher one. If they differ by more than that, you were shifting your feet.
Hold the suitcase close. Holding it out in front loads your back and makes you wobble, which is how you get a 3 lb spread between readings. Digital scales that flash the number for a few seconds are easier than ones that blank the moment you fidget.
Leave a 2 lb buffer under the limit you care about. A 48 lb reading at home can still trip a 50 lb airport scale if your platform rounds down, the bag picked up rain, or you stuffed a jacket in the outside pocket on the way out.
If you cannot lift the bag onto the scale
A packed 28-inch spinner can be 45 lb before you add the last pair of boots. If you cannot lift it cleanly, do not jerk it onto a bathroom scale. You will twist a wrist and the reading will be junk.
Two options work. Have another adult step on the scale with you while you both hold the bag, then subtract both body weights. Or set a rigid board on the scale, zero is still a problem on many home scales, so stand on the board yourself, then stand on it holding the bag and subtract the same way. The board only helps if it sits fully on the platform and does not teeter.
If you cannot lift the bag at all, treat that as a warning. A suitcase you cannot hoist is often already over 50 lb, which is the usual US checked cap.
Other checks when there is no bathroom scale
A US gallon of water weighs 8.34 lb. Lift that jug, then lift the suitcase. You will not get a number. You will get a yes or no on whether the bag is in the same neighborhood as two, four, or six gallons. That is useful the night before a flight. It is not useful when you are 2 lb from the line.
A bag of pet food, cat litter, or salt with the weight printed on the sack works the same way. Match the printed number to your airline cap and compare the feel. Keep the comparison honest: a 50 lb sack of pellets is dense and compact, a 50 lb suitcase is bulky, so the handle pressure will not feel identical.
Hotels sometimes keep a scale at the gym or the front desk. Ask. The gym scale is a bathroom scale with a different paint job, so use the same subtraction method. Airport bag-drop scales in the hall, the ones that sit before the actual check-in belt, are the closest match to the counter. Use those if you are already at the terminal and still have time to pull items out.
How much an empty suitcase weighs
Empty weight is the part of the allowance you spend before a single shirt goes in. A 5.4 lb softside carry-on leaves more of a 7 kg / 15 lb cabin cap than a 9.5 lb hybrid shell. On a 50 lb checked bag, that gap is a pair of shoes plus a toiletry kit.
Every number in this table is the empty weight the brand prints on its own product page. They are spec-sheet figures, not TBE scale readings, and they are not a promise that your bag will match to the ounce. Tags, covers, leftover dirt, and a water bottle in the outside pocket all add weight the spec sheet never counted.

A 40 L travel pack at 3.3 lb and a 29 in spinner at 11.5 lb are not the same object. The pack leaves you about 8 lb more of a 50 lb checked allowance, or most of a 7 kg cabin cap, before clothes. The aluminum cabin case spends that allowance on the shell. Pick the empty weight the way you pick the airline, not as an afterthought.
Add typical contents
Empty weight plus a short list of heavy items is the other way to estimate when you cannot lift the whole bag. Use published weights where they exist. Treat clothing as a working estimate, not a TBE weighing.
- 13-inch MacBook Air (M5): 2.7 lb, Apple tech specs.
- 1 liter of water: 2.2 lb. Physics, not a packing tip. A full bottle in a side pocket is this number.
- Pair of jeans: about 1.5-2 lb. Typical range, not a TBE scale reading.
- Pair of sneakers: about 1.5-2.5 lb depending on the foam and the size. Typical range.
- Toiletry kit: often 1-2 lb once you fill travel bottles. A single 3.4 oz / 100 ml bottle of liquid is 0.22 lb of liquid, plus the plastic. Our TSA approved toiletry bag guide covers what actually fits in the quart bag.
Here's that math on one carry-on. The empty weight is Travelpro's spec sheet, the laptop is Apple's published figure, and the jeans, sneakers, and toiletry kit are the estimates from the list above.
| Line | lb | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Travelpro Maxlite 5 Carry-On Spinner, empty | 5.4 | Travelpro spec sheet |
| 13-inch MacBook Air M5 | 2.7 | Apple tech specs |
| Pair of jeans | 1.8 | Estimate, not a TBE scale reading |
| Pair of sneakers | 2.0 | Estimate, not a TBE scale reading |
| Toiletry kit | 1.5 | Estimate, not a TBE scale reading |
| Total in this example | 13.4 | Sum of the rows above |
That's 13.4 lb before a single shirt goes in: 36.6 lb under a 50 lb checked cap, and only 2 lb under a 7 kg / 15.4 lb cabin cap. Swap in your own bag's empty weight from the table above and the same addition tells you how much clothing the allowance still has room for.
Airline weight limits that get you charged
Most US airlines don't publish a cabin-bag weight cap. They care whether you can lift the bag into the bin. Frontier is the exception in that group: its bag-options page caps both the personal item and the carry-on at 35 lb / 16 kg.
Checked bags are the other story. American, Delta, United, Southwest, Alaska, and JetBlue all cap a standard economy piece at 50 lb (about 23 kg) on their own baggage pages. Go over and you pay an overweight fee, which is a separate line from the bag fee itself. Our airline baggage allowance comparison breaks those pieces down by fare. Here are the weight rules that matter most, including the carriers that do weigh the overhead bag:
| Carrier | Weight rule |
|---|---|
| American, Delta, United, Southwest, Alaska, JetBlue, checked | 50 lb / 23 kg in economy |
| Frontier, personal item and carry-on | 35 lb / 16 kg each |
| Frontier, checked | 40 lb / 18 kg in economy |
| Ryanair, large cabin bag | 10 kg / 22 lb, and only with Priority & 2 Cabin Bags |
| easyJet, each cabin bag | 15 kg / 33 lb |
| Singapore Airlines Economy cabin | 7 kg / 15 lb |
| Emirates Economy cabin | 7 kg / 15 lb |
We rechecked every row against the carrier's own baggage page before this guide went live. Weight is only half of the counter check, and our airline carry-on size chart covers the dimensions side. Ryanair's 10 kg bag also has its own size box, which our Ryanair cabin bag size guide measures out. Airlines change fees often. Confirm the allowance printed on your own ticket before you pack to the line.
A 7 kg cabin cap is 15.4 lb for the bag and everything in it. The Maxlite 5's 5.4 lb spec-sheet empty weight leaves about 10 lb for clothes. The Carl Friedrik Hybrid's 9.5 lb spec leaves about 6 lb. That is why empty weight shows up in forum threads more than it shows up on US domestic itineraries.
When a hanging luggage scale is worth packing
The bathroom-scale method is enough when you are 5 lb under. It is a poor tool when you are 1 lb under, when you are packing in a hotel with no scale, or when the airline weighs cabin bags at the gate. A hanging scale lives in a side pocket and weighs the bag the same way the desk agent does: hook, lift, read.
Zero the hook before you lift. Set pounds or kilograms to match the ticket. Hold the bag still for 10 to 15 seconds. Weigh twice. Check a new scale once against the bathroom-scale method above; if the two disagree by more than a pound, leave a bigger buffer. If you want the size check that happens at the same counter, how to measure luggage covers wheels and handles, which is the other way bags fail.
A hanging scale does not replace the spec-sheet empty weight. It replaces the guess about what you packed on top of that empty weight.
If the bag is over at the counter
Pull dense, small items into the cabin: laptop, shoes you can wear, a toiletry kit that still clears liquids rules, a hardcover book. Leave a down jacket or a cube of t-shirts in the checked bag. A jacket looks huge and weighs little. A pair of boots looks small and does not.
If the bag is over on weight and also close on size, do not expand the zipper to make room. Expansion adds depth, and oversize is a separate fee. Wear the heaviest shoes. Move liquids that fail the cabin rule into a friend's under-limit bag only if that person is on the same ticket and the airline allows it. Otherwise buy a second checked piece, or accept the overweight charge and stop unpacking in the line.
A personal item next to the carry-on is the other relief valve, as long as both still fit. Our guide to bringing a carry-on and a backpack is the cabin version of that split. Weight and size are different counters. Fix the one the agent is pointing at.
FAQ
How can I weigh my suitcase at home without a luggage scale?
Use a bathroom scale. Weigh yourself, weigh yourself holding the packed bag, and subtract. Repeat once and keep the higher bag weight. Leave about 2 lb under the airline cap so a fussy airport scale does not flip you over the line.
How much does an empty suitcase weigh?
The brand spec sheets in our table put common carry-ons between 5.1 lb and 10.8 lb empty. Travel backpacks in that set sit near 3.3 to 3.5 lb. A 29 in checked spinner in the same set is 11.5 lb. Those figures come off the brand pages, not a TBE scale.
Can I use a bathroom scale to weigh luggage?
Yes. Most bathroom scales will not read a suitcase sitting on them alone, so hold the bag and subtract your body weight. Stand on a hard floor, hold the bag against your chest, and take two readings. It is the standard home method when you do not own a hanging scale.
How accurate is the bathroom-scale method?
Close enough when you are several pounds under the cap, and shaky when you are within a pound. Repeat the weighing. Keep the higher number. Add a 2 lb buffer. The airport scale is still the one that bills you, so do not pack to 49.9 lb on a kitchen floor.
What if the suitcase is too heavy to lift onto the scale?
Have two people stand on the scale while holding the bag, then subtract both body weights. Or treat the fact that you cannot lift it as the result: you are likely already over 50 lb. Do not yank a 45 lb spinner onto a bathroom scale by the handle.
Do US airlines weigh carry-on bags?
Most US majors publish no cabin weight cap and only ask that you can lift the bag into the bin. Frontier publishes 35 lb on the cabin bag. International carriers often weigh cabin bags at 7 kg or 10 kg, which is why empty suitcase weight matters more on those tickets.
